"Booked this place originally as it appeared to have the best menu choice in town. We arrived on a quiet Sunday evening - there were only 2 other families dining at the same time - yet had to wait at least 30 minutes for our mains to be served from the time of ordering. The chicken Caesar salads, the salmon fishcakes and the corn-fed chicken on bulgur wheat and vegetable dishes were fine but the pave d’agneau (rump of lamb) had just 3 small pieces of meat, 3 spring onions and a heaped tablespoon of mashed carrot & swede so very poor value for the money - one portion of lamb was found to be gristly and inedible. The desserts ordered were also served in very small portions more suited to a children’s menu rather than that for a full-paying adult except for the crêpe chocolat banana. As for the tranche au chocolat with crème fraîche. Not only was the portion size too small but the crème fraîche was not fresh, indeed it had a rather weird taste resembling cottage cheese! The waitress and the other member of staff were pleasant enough but the service was unacceptably slow considering how few customers were in the restaurant at the time. I have eaten at other Café Rouge restaurants in Basingstoke and Knightsbridge and the dining experience there has been better than this. I would consider that the restaurant needs to focus on serving a much simpler menu on a Sunday which offers a better quality, adult portion sizes and therefore better value for money in return. Crème caramel would be nicer than crème brûlée."

"
An expensive disappointment. We visited on  a quiet Sunday evening, the service was fine, attentive and  not in your face. But the food was very poor for what  turned out to be £34 per head for starter and main course  with 2 bottles of mediocre wine between 4 of us. The  escargot were tasteless, probably tinned, as was the beef  bourginon and dauphinoise potatoes."

Given that Wokingham has effectively lost a restaurant after iMMO transformed itself into the second branch of Prezzo in the town, it’s heartening to see Café Rouge opening to fill this void.

Taking the lion’s share of the New Rose pub in the heart of the town, Café Rouge is impressively large but has a mission on its hands to fill all the tables in its cavernous interior.

The décor is a Francophile’s dream, if a little too contrived in places. However, the owners have managed to create the same convivial atmosphere found in branches around the UK with many of the trimmings you would find in a traditional Parisian brasserie.

With a simple, uncomplicated crowd-pleasing menu Café Rouge offers something for pretty much any tastes, and the kitchen manages to pack in an impressive amount of flavour into even the most simple offering.

Take a steak baguette - middling steak lifted by delicious bread, Dijon mustard and a healthy coating of distinctly French butter. Or a croque monsieur - you’ll find all the oozing, unhealthy yet oh so delicious flavours here.

What is also appealing about this and other Café Rouges is that you don’t necessarily have to visit for a full three course meal, or a meal as such at all. They seem quite happy to accommodate visitors who just want to share a bottle of wine, with maybe a pudding between two at some point.

The service is generally top notch, although there was a sense of the waiters being slightly bored in the Wokingham branch on the day of our last visit as our table was one of only three or four occupied at around 9.30pm. That aside, we were still made to feel welcome and the timing of our order was pretty much perfect.

Another plus is the pricing - it’s what it should be for the standard of cooking on offer and will neither break the bank or give you the impression that the ingredients must be poor quality because it’s too cheap.

We’re glad to see this kind of restaurant arriving in Wokingham, especially as the only other offerings in town are pretty much Italian and Indian. They’ve got a battle on their hands to fill this space, and they could do with turning the lights down a little, but on the whole it’s well worth a visit, even if you just drop in for a coffee.
