A non-descript, dour Chinese restaurant offering takeaway standard food and moody staff.

Located at California crossroads in Finchampstead, Chef Peking should have the ideal spot to create a buzzing restaurant - Xenuk, an Indian restaurant nearby, offers the only competition.

But Chef Peking fails on all accounts - the décor is dated, the atmosphere brightly lit and unfriendly and the food of a very mediocre standard.

Chef Peking could easily be so much more, but at present fails miserably on all accounts. Get a takeaway instead, or take a taxi somewhere else for your Chinese food.

"This is my favourite restaurant in the Wokingham area. Not only do we get consistently high quality food but also a very warm welcome and excellent service."

"
As a local Chinese resident, I used to avoid Chef Peking due to the appalling quality of food. The new management has done a superb job turning the restaurant round and the food is now surprisingly decent! So eat with confidence guys!"

"
We recently visited the Chef Peking for a celebratory dinner. The service and food were good although the food was perhaps rather too salty for our taste. A disappointing feature was that, without comment, a 10% service charge was added to the end of our bill and then we were asked by the credit card machine to add a tip. Many people, particularly a group, would not notice the service charge on the bill and would, in effect, tip twice. This meant that we came away with a mixed impression of the restaurant. Let's hope they change this particular piece of 'sharp practice'."

"As
a regular to this restaurant I have never failed to be impressed by the service, staff, food and atmosphere. The owner/manager is lovely and always greets with a smile. The longest I have waited to be served is a few minutes, even when the restaurant is full. The food is superb, cooked to perfection and always hot and generous portions."

"
I have had two takeaways from Chef Peking in the last couple of months and both have been excellent. Both times we ordered too much, but the food was so delicious we ended up eating everything."

"
I have been to "New" Chef Peking's twice before, and have never been disappointed. The service is always good, the restaurant is clean, contemporary, and very well looked after. As always good choice on mains, a little short of choice for starters and dessert. Overall, a good experience and I would recommend it to anyone."

"
This restaurant is under new management and it shows. Great choice of dishes, superb tasty food and friendly helpful staff. Try the grilled dumplings and Peking duck, delicious!"

"
If you read the reviews on this restaurant you might think about not going. So, ignore the reviews written before November 2010 and book a table for a great meal. We took our two young girls for lunch today and the food, the ambience and the service was great. £60 for a family Sunday lunch including drinks seems like great value for money these days. We will be going back soon."

"
Last friday was the first time I been back to Chef Peking after five years and to my surprise, it has completely changed! Modern, warmer deco, friendly and attentive staff, wider choice of food, the food served in generous portion, fresh and delicious! Will definitely go back and thumbs up for the new management!"

"
Located at California Crossroads in the leafy Berkshire village of Finchampstead, this Chinese Restaurant is now under new Management since 6th Nov 2010. My party of 9 visited the Chef Peking for Lunch on the 13th Nov 2010, & the menu and interior have been completely revamped under the new owner; we found the Service & Food much improved. We asked the Chef to prepare his own choice of dishes for a 3 course lunch & he was able to effortlessly accommodate, a peanut allergy & a no Pork request for the party. I particularly enjoyed the sizzling beef; the best I've had for ages ! The Lamb & lemon grass dish was also a delight. The only negative comment I have remains on the view of the Restaurant from its rear car park, but don't let that put you off ! This excellent Chinese Restaurant is good value for money & well worth adding to your itinerary should you find yourself on Business or Pleasure in and around Wokingham."

My first impressions of the new look was amazing! I love the colour scheme! Very modern and clean look! Staff are extremely friendly, service was first class! The food was very nice and presented well! Atmosphere was relaxing. Would definitely recommend a visit to the new and improved restaurant!"

"
Great new look. Very friendly and attentive staff. Crispy duck was amazing. Spicy scallops were on point. Quality as good if not better than any London fine dining restaurant."

"
Awful. Meat courses appear to have been cooked sometime ago and reheated. Mongolian lamb, spare ribs and duck so dry as to be barely edible."

"
Went for meal on Saturday and found the staff, food & restaurant very pleasant. My partner and I both enjoyed the food and the staff were very friendly. The manager was very attentive and asked us if everything was satisfactory and we had a very pleasant conversation. We will definitely make this a regular occurrence."

"
Will never go again. Very disappointed. The food served was not as described on the menu. I sent one of the main courses back, and the same plate came back out. Very over priced. Drinks very expensive, on the whole a disastrous night out which was meant to be a special birthday treat."

"
My wife and I have used this Chinese quite regularly (once every 2 months or so) and we have found the staff to be helpful and attentive and the owner / manager always acknowledges my wife and I and also any other "regulars" we have observed. The food has always been consistent admittedly not stupendous but always enjoyable."
