Just a few miles from Saffron Walden lies the picturesque village of Great Chesterford which is where The Crown House hotel is located. The building is split into two blocks - the main reception area, bar and rooms and a separate block of rooms. In the middle is a courtyard offering ample parking. The rooms are spacious, clean and well lit, although the décor is a bit outdated and 80s. The bar is a decent size and perfect for a pre-dinner drink, although not somewhere you’d want to spend the whole night as it had a slightly clinical and business-like feel to it. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, and at £60 a night including breakfast, The Crown provides a very reasonably priced alternative to staying in the ridiculously expensive Saffron Walden. Deserves to do well, but loses half a star from our rating for the decor. The hotel’s official rating is three stars from both the AA and RAC.
