If you manage to get a seat in the subterranean cave of Gordon’s you will not want to move - soon you will be hypnotised by the flickering candles and dripping ceiling and intoxicated by wine and the rich platters of cheese. This is a bar that is really worth making a detour to visit purely for the uniqueness of its downstairs area which has been built into a disused section of tube line. The only light is a candle per table giving the venue the feel of a drinking hole of an era gone by. If you can’t squeeze in downstairs there is a large outside seating area at the side, which is perfectly pleasant, but not quite the same. There are no drinks served other than wine and port (house wine starts at £12.95) although you can get a coffee. Food consists of huge chunks of cheese and bread together with other assorted nibbles. Easy to get to from either Embankment or Charing Cross Tube Stations. Don’t be put off by the shabby exterior - this only adds to the character of the venue. Wonderful.
