Oh dear. Every once in a while a restaurant comes along that is so appallingly bad you almost cant believe it, and Hamptons is one such place. Situated at the corner of the bridge over the Thames in Hampton Court, the location is fantastic with great views of the water and in theory perfect for lunch or dinner. However, the ambience, food and service can only be described as phenomenally bad. The venue is split into a restaurant and a brasserie, although there seems to be little difference in either the menu or cost between the two sections. The brasserie is effectively an airy pub, complete with pots of sauce sachets on the table - always a bad sign. The menu offers starters from around £5 and mains from £14 upwards - ludicrous when you realise that you are being served poor quality food cooked in an almost inedible way. For example, a steak - at £16.95 - was completely tasteless and dry, massively overcooked with a burnt mushroom on the side of the plate and a side dish of six highly-flavoured chipped potatoes. Given the location and the fact that the residents of Hampton Court are probably among some of the highest earning in the UK, this venue in theory should be a license to print money, but should be avoided at all costs. Anyone with any semblance of intelligence could serve half descent food in here and make a fortune. Dire on all accounts and definitely a perfect venue for Ramsays Kitchen Nightmares.
