Le Comptoir’s reputation must have spread far and wide as the queue to get in was populated by visitors from across the globe. In fact it was the only brasserie with a queue in what is an area packed with both restaurants and tourists. The small burgundy hued dining area smacks of everything Parisian, but you won’t hear much French spoken inside as no-one dining is local and all the waiters speak excellent English. Dishes ooze tradition - from chunks of succulent beef in a rich red wine sauce to whole coquet with potatoes and garlic. The ingredients all taste extremely fresh and are cooked with a subtlety that allows the natural flavours to dominate - no heavy handed seasoning. Despite the pressure on this venue (the queue was constant) you do not feel rushed by the waiters and there’s plenty of time of people watching between courses. Example cost: two starters, two mains, a plate of cheese to share, one bottle of red, one bottle of water, two glasses of white and an espresso - £65. An good choice if you want tradition in a relaxed - but buzzy - environment. Worth noting the restaurant did not take advance bookings - it was first come first served.
