WOKINGHAM may be a long way from the sea but the town does have its naval connections - during its 400 year history The Ship Inn in Peach Street was run by a notable seaman, hence the pub’s name.
Although the exact details of who he was are unclear, if he were alive today and ever hankered for a taste of his former life he could take a short walk along London Road to sample the freshly caught seafood at Loch Fyne.
The restaurant, built into the former Plough Inn pub, offers a welcome alternative to the plethora of Italian and Indian restaurants which dominate Wokingham’s dining scene.
The restaurant itself is spacious and airy but has enough levels and beams to allow diners to feel intimate.
The food is what you’d expect from a Loch Fyne - an extensive choice of fresh fish - both freshwater and from the sea - together with a meat dish or two for the compulsive carnivores among us.
Starters range from £6-£8 while mains vary enormously, especially if you opt for a platter. These are substantial and offer a wide selection of shell-on seafood, including shrimp and langoustines, together with oysters and mussels.
The platters come with a choice of either crab or lobster, which the latter costing £44 for two people to share. Desserts are simple, satisfying and inexpensive.
Wine starts at £13.50 a bottle for a Sauvignon or a Chardonnay, while Champagne (which is must with oysters!) starts at £35 a bottle.
Overall, the food, presentation and service are extremely good and, despite the restaurant's slightly out-of-town location, is proving popular

"Visited this branch mid March, been 2-3 times before. Took our 2 small kids. Staff friendly and attentive, I do find they genuinely welcome kids. We could have done with slightly more space between tables but not a big problem. Kids' salmon goujons went down well. Our mains (fish and chips & Bradan Rost) also good. I did find the Bradan Rost a little over-salty but maybe that's the way it's intended to be?! Busy but pleasant ambience Saturday tea-time, family groups giving way to couples and adults by time we left around 7pm. Will go back."

"I've been here four or five times and always had a decent meal with good service. It's a nice building, cosily laid out, and the menu is fairly extensive, obviously mostly fish -- the salmon and bream were especially good -- with one or two other options like steak. Salad and veg come separately for a small extra charge. Prices are reasonable, more so if you take advantage of various set-menu offers, and there are a few beers on tap as well as the wine list. Staff seem to know what they're doing. Don't take a vegetarian here unless they just want to eat bread!"

"I can't understand some of the negative comments below as I have only ever had good experiences at Loch Fyne - in Wokingham and elsewhere. I have found the food to be of a consistently high standard - with the seafood platters tasting particularly fresh. I've had one experience were the service was slow (at the Reading branch) but aside from that they've always run like clockwork. The only criticism I have of the Wokingham outlet is that it's not in the town centre where I could go more often."

"Had 2 meals on 2 separate occasions very pleased with the quality. The wine is a bit pricey. No real beer to speak of on the menu."

"Went with friends, had the Xmas menu, total disaster from start to finish. Service was very slow 3 hours for 3 course meal. They tended to look after the large parties better. Drinks took ages to arrive. Main course arrived without veg. We had all eaten the main course before the veg arrived. No apologies. Coffee was advertised on menu, we asked for tea, we couldn't have tea. Then they relented. Will definitely not go again. Food not up to the standard they advertise. Al la carte very pricey. Very cramped, and loud music. What a shame the pub closed it was a great place."

"Really disappointing meal. Not only were the fish options basic, they were over seasoned, yet still rather flavoursomeless! The oysters were quite poor quality and menu choice overall quite limited. The service was over fussy and the wine choice was hugely over priced. This restaurant is tending to cater for large groups and the intimacy of this good old English pub as it was has been lost forever. We won’t be going back in a hurry."
