THE five-star St David’s Hotel stands as a glass monolith guarding Cardiff Bay. Minimalist, with fantastic views over the bay, it is streets ahead in terms of quality and service from anything else on offer in the area. All the rooms have floor to ceiling glass windows with views over the water, together with decked balconies. The rooms are spacious and presented with chic décor. The re-vamped bay area, which is packed with bars and restaurants, is just a short walk away. Many of these are fairly standard chain affairs but they do the job for a quick snack and a drink. There’s also plenty of al fresco seating which is an added bonus. This is an attractive part of Cardiff, although the developers have gone a bit heavy on the chrome and canvas look. Generally this area of the city has an upbeat feel about it and judging by the plethora of swanky flats in the area there is clearly the money to support the burgeoning restaurant trade. And anything has got to be better than the hotel’s restaurant, Tides Bar and Grill, which, on the date of the review, offered comically appalling food, poor service and farcical prices.
