"Thia is a pub/restaurant with excellent, freshly prepared food made from scratch. The children's menu is equally freshly made & no processed rubbish. It is refreshing to find somewhere that accepts and treats children as diners. A game was provided and colouring if they wanted it. The restaurant is spotless & beautifully decorated. The food was delicious. The service was spot on & the manager very friendly without being intrusive. We paid £93 for 6 people including a  round of drinks - I think that is value for money when everything was fresh & good quality. I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant & we're glad we found it."

"
Lovely restaurant, extremely attentive staff and good food. But the taxi took an hour to arrive and charged £57 From finchampstead to Sandhurst, about 3 times what it should be! This was more than the cost of a London trip!, hotel and meal included!"

"
I have just had the most awful meal here with my husband, bland, luke warm, soggy food. Save your money or go elsewhere."

"
Went to The Greyhound last night; was a bit worried as some of the reviews did not rate the  place very highly, but we were dropping my daughter at a party nearby so we thought we would give it a go.   The decor was great and the atmosphere was lovely. Manager and staff were all really attentive and service  was prompt and courteous. The food was absolutely delicious and presented really well. Must recommend  the antipasto sharing platter and the baked camenbert which was on the specials menu. Best panacotta and  chocolate brownies we have every tasted. Cheese board was also delicious if you like strong cheeses -  which we do. Will be going again."

"
My husband and I had a delicious meal on 2nd July 2011. Restaurant- modern decor and seats comfortable. Thought  tables for too were too  close together. Restaurant was full. Food was delicious, table service good, atmosphere good. All dishes a tad expensive, however we look forward to returning soon, as it was an enjoyable evening. Thank you, a night to remember."

"
I recently had a retirement party at the Greyhound. The help and organisation was totally hassle free with some really good suggestions to ensure everything would go smoothly on the night. We were offered the conservatory for the evening ideal for the twenty people I had invited. The service was great and the meals excellent, no errors and nobody left waiting for their meal to arrive. Two staff were allocated to taking drink orders and generally looking after us, so no queuing at the bar. Many thanks to Ian, the manager, and his wife, Wendy, together with their staff for making the event such a success. An evening to remember. Thoroughly recommended."

"
We took a party of 6 for a meal to find, it has been under new management since Jan 2011. The venue is much improved, the service  and food was excellent. Highly recommended by all members of my party."

"
I never cease to be amazed that when a pub gets a couple of bad reviews, suddenly a couple of praiseworthy reviews appear, written in that unmistakable style of the managers themselves! I was dragged here, against my will, and found witless managers, poor food and a laissez faire service by a charmless idiot. I struggle to understand why a company who brought us the hungry horse brand think that they can serve chateabriand well."

"
I've been to the Greyhound many times and have had outstanding service each and every time and will happily recommend it to anyone. The food is of excellent quality and and the service is fantastic. I can't give enough praise to The managers and the staff and will go there all the time."

"
Called in for lunch there on 5th March 2011. Dont do it-save your money. Poor food, offhand staff. Brakes Brothers type food, Punch Taverns type venue--so British. Life is too short for this type of nonsense."

"
I have used The Greyhound a few times and it is rubbish. The Management have no imagination.  When I was there the waiter dropped a glass that splattered and bits of glass were under our table.  A drink was also dropped a little later also near us so we had to stand while they cleared it up.  The Manager did not even offer us a drink or something complimentary. The glowing report Nadine gives must be a set up. If they were serving that many people they should be a thriving business but they have just sold it. Hopefully the new owners will look at the food quality and offer a more realistic price /quality ratio rather than the pretentiously overpriced rubbish they serve."

Tonight 21/2/11 I have eaten at the Greyhound. I was worried because of the recent bad reviews I have seen. But the recent change in management has done wonders. The food was good and well presented - I enjoyed  fish and my wife had a good steak. It's well worth a try."

"
I have to agree with the majority of the comments about the Greyhound, Finchampstead. I ate their last night with a party of eight. They got many thngs right, great ambience and friendly staff who are keen to give good service. Unfortunaltely the whole evening was let down by the quality of the food. Based on the price you would expect good quality. However, although the presentation was good the food was not. We did not pay for the pizzas as they were awful, had hardly any toping and the base was too thin and over cooked, giving them a consistency of cardboard. Even simple ingredients like the fries were poor and not what you would expect from this sort of establishment. I will not eat there again until the quality of the food improves as it does not represent good value for money. At the moment it charges restaurant prices but serves pub food."

"
Really wanted to like this place on my second visit. However, just as disappointed as on my first visit. Atmosphere great, decor great, its just that the food does not live up to the expectation. So perhaps next time I will just go for a glass of wine. At least then I will enjoy the ambience. Will not eat there again. Expensive for the quality and standard. Such a shame as the area really needs some good eating places - the catchment area is enormous but all we get is rubbish food at inflated prices. Next time I will go to MacDonalds, at least it’s cheap and you know what you are getting."

"
I am really upset by the poor review you have given The Greyhound, finchampstead. I have eaten there on over 10 occasions and every single time it have been wonderful. The food is excellently presented and fresh which is more than you can say for most 'pubs'. Since going there for the first time back when it opened I have recomended it to all of my colleagues and friends and everyone that has been has found it to be fairly priced for the standard of cuisine and has enjoyed their experience there. As for the mentioned Chocalate Fondant, that is my favorite dessert on the menu and to boot it is an exquisite rendition of a classic. I have been in the catering industry for over 12 years and it is one of the best I have ever tasted. I have suggested my girl firends try it when they have gone and everyone of them that has has said it was divine. I think your writer has porr taste. As for the Standard of Service...there is room for improvement but the front of house staff are all young and learning, lets not forget we were all starting in our first job at some point in time and it takes time to develop skill. I think you should give The Greyhound another chance. They must be doing something right as there are 100's of other customers just like myself that are returning week after week as I often see familiar faces and recommending others to go. I called to find out a few statistics and they serve an average of 200-250 per day and have done since they opened. I would rate this a 4 star resturant and I will continue to recomment that people go as I think it is exceptional."

"
I completely agree with your review. We've tried it twice. Overpriced and poor quality food. It's such a shame because I wanted it to be good as there are few good places around here. They need to stop trying to be clever and concentrate on good quality meat and good cooking."

The Greyhound has had a troubled few years - numerous invasions by members of the travelling community who used the car park as a base while the pub stood empty, and a failed attempt to re-open the venue left its future uncertain.

But all that is in the past as The Greyhound has been given a modern and uplifting facelift to become a predominately restaurant destination in a culinary barren area of Wokingham borough.

This, in theory, should bode well for the owners, who at present have a near monopoly on dining in this area of the borough, especially with the modern European flavoured menu.

But, given that we are still in the depths of recession at the time of writing, the owners appear to have seriously misjudged the price to quality ratio of what they are serving and our experience of The Greyhound was, on the whole, an expensive disappointment.

When we arrived there were no front-of-house staff visible to show us to our table so we ended up collaring a young waiter who eventually managed to find someone who could assist us.

Finally seated, we were able to soak up the atmosphere of the restaurant which is very pleasant indeed - modern clean lines with various booths around the outside combined with an open plan kitchen show real attention to detail when it came to refitting the former pub, putting aside the incongruous 'funny' animal pictures on the wall that is.

Unfortunately the overall aesthetic was not in tune with the poorly prepared pub grub being churned out by the kitchen for what were stomach churning prices - these days there are deals available at Michelin-starred restaurants in London which are less expensive.

Our starters were scallops with chorizo and black pudding (£8) and caramalised onion tartin with Taleggio cheese (£5). The scallops were tiny and the chorizo and black pudding were devoid of flavour. The tartin was so sweet it should have been a pudding.

For mains we had a ribeye steak with chips (a mind-boggling £18.75) and pan fried salmon with wild mushrooms and spinach (£14.95). The steak was poor quality and not cooked to our order of rare and the chips were dull, the tiny salmon fillet was burned on top and the mushrooms and spinach tasteless. The salmon was meant to come with a slice of fried pancetta, but they only managed a half slice (the salmon was used to hide the fact).

We shared a chocolate fondant with ice cream for pudding (£5.75) - passable but not exactly memorable.

We left feeling angry - angry at the owners for trying to take people for a ride and angry that what could have been something special is in fact nothing more than a good looking pub serving the same tired menu selections - and even that has not been done well.

A real shame.
