"Really wanted to like this place on my second visit. However, just as disappointed as on my first visit. Atmosphere great, decor great, its just that the food does not live up to the expectation. So perhaps next time I will just go for a glass of wine. At least then I will enjoy the ambience. Will not eat there again. Expensive for the quality and standard. Such a shame as the area really needs some good eating places - the catchment area is enormous but all we get is rubbish food at inflated prices. Next time I will go to MacDonalds, at least it’s cheap and you know what you are getting."

I am really upset by the poor review you have given The Greyhound, finchampstead. I have eaten there on over 10 occasions and every single time it have been wonderful. The food is excellently presented and fresh which is more than you can say for most 'pubs'. Since going there for the first time back when it opened I have recomended it to all of my colleagues and friends and everyone that has been has found it to be fairly priced for the standard of cuisine and has enjoyed their experience there. As for the mentioned Chocalate Fondant, that is my favorite dessert on the menu and to boot it is an exquisite rendition of a classic. I have been in the catering industry for over 12 years and it is one of the best I have ever tasted. I have suggested my girl firends try it when they have gone and everyone of them that has has said it was divine. I think your writer has porr taste. As for the Standard of Service...there is room for improvement but the front of house staff are all young and learning, lets not forget we were all starting in our first job at some point in time and it takes time to develop skill. I think you should give The Greyhound another chance. They must be doing something right as there are 100's of other customers just like myself that are returning week after week as I often see familiar faces and recommending others to go. I called to find out a few statistics and they serve an average of 200-250 per day and have done since they opened. I would rate this a 4 star resturant and I will continue to recomment that people go as I think it is exceptional."

"
I completely agree with your review. We've tried it twice. Overpriced and poor quality food. It's such a shame because I wanted it to be good as there are few good places around here. They need to stop trying to be clever and concentrate on good quality meat and good cooking."

The Greyhound has had a troubled few years - numerous invasions by members of the travelling community who used the car park as a base while the pub stood empty, and a failed attempt to re-open the venue left its future uncertain.

But all that is in the past as The Greyhound has been given a modern and uplifting facelift to become a predominately restaurant destination in a culinary barren area of Wokingham borough.

This, in theory, should bode well for the owners, who at present have a near monopoly on dining in this area of the borough, especially with the modern European flavoured menu.

But, given that we are still in the depths of recession at the time of writing, the owners appear to have seriously misjudged the price to quality ratio of what they are serving and our experience of The Greyhound was, on the whole, an expensive disappointment.

When we arrived there were no front-of-house staff visible to show us to our table so we ended up collaring a young waiter who eventually managed to find someone who could assist us.

Finally seated, we were able to soak up the atmosphere of the restaurant which is very pleasant indeed - modern clean lines with various booths around the outside combined with an open plan kitchen show real attention to detail when it came to refitting the former pub, putting aside the incongruous 'funny' animal pictures on the wall that is.

Unfortunately the overall aesthetic was not in tune with the poorly prepared pub grub being churned out by the kitchen for what were stomach churning prices - these days there are deals available at Michelin-starred restaurants in London which are less expensive.

Our starters were scallops with chorizo and black pudding (£8) and caramalised onion tartin with Taleggio cheese (£5). The scallops were tiny and the chorizo and black pudding were devoid of flavour. The tartin was so sweet it should have been a pudding.

For mains we had a ribeye steak with chips (a mind-boggling £18.75) and pan fried salmon with wild mushrooms and spinach (£14.95). The steak was poor quality and not cooked to our order of rare and the chips were dull, the tiny salmon fillet was burned on top and the mushrooms and spinach tasteless. The salmon was meant to come with a slice of fried pancetta, but they only managed a half slice (the salmon was used to hide the fact).

We shared a chocolate fondant with ice cream for pudding (£5.75) - passable but not exactly memorable.

We left feeling angry - angry at the owners for trying to take people for a ride and angry that what could have been something special is in fact nothing more than a good looking pub serving the same tired menu selections - and even that has not been done well.

A real shame.
