Another Italian restaurant has landed in Wokingham.
Although the Zizzi chain does what it says on the tin and does it well, I cannot help but feel overwhelmingly disappointed yet another opportunity has been lost to diversify the town’s restaurant selection.
Why not a quaint French bistro, why not a Chinese restaurant (the town centre does not have one) or, and this may be too extreme for those used to munching on pizza, why not a Japanese sushi eatery?
But alas this is what the people of Wokingham want - apparently - although being such a wealthy place I cannot imagine the great and good of the town only ever want a plate of basic pasta when they dine out on a Friday night.
Surely Wokingham is prime location for the next Fat Duck equivalent restaurant. The disposable income is here, and, I hope, so are the taste buds for something a bit different.
Back to Zizzi. The location in Broad Street is good and the first thing that struck me when I sat down was how great it is for people watching with the large floor to ceiling windows looking out on the bustle (sometimes!) of Wokingham town centre.
The chain has done a good job transforming the space and it is light, modern, with an open kitchen and a good view of the oven where the pizzas are cooked. The staff are also really friendly and seem to know their stuff about the menu.
I picked one of their seasonal pizzas, the Sofia, which came with spicy chicken, some chilli, pepperoni and sausage. The chicken was in generous bite sized chunks and was very moist. The different meats worked well together and there was just enough heat.
However, although I enjoyed it there was nothing to make this pizza stand out from any of the others on offer at Wokingham’s many Italian restaurants, such as iMMO, Prezzo and Pizza Express.

"Ideal for a safe night out that won't break the bank; average menu but food fine, nicely designed restaurant; one of the better pizza/pasta chains. However, service is often just about OK, some of the staff are friendly but others look miserable. A friend who needs to eat gluten free food, was seriously ill after eating something that was allegedly gluten free. Look out on Voucher Cloud or Money saving expert for discount vouchers."

"Zizzis Wokingham has come on tremendously since the new manageress who btw is moving to Winchester shame as she has taken average service to excellent. We go there at least 5 times a month and busy or not it’s always good attentive service. On Monday 28th Feb 11 it was packed but never did young 16 year old Shannon ever make us feel neglected she was informative enthusiastic and attentive 100% well done waiting staff everywhere could learn from you. Rustic Pizzas are what Italians in Tuscany should copy as didn’t find anything comparable in fact they were dire there and more expensive than just down the road Zizzis."

"One of far too many Restaurants selling this type fare in Wokingham, & not doing it too well now either! My party of 4 visited Zizzi's at 6PM on Nov 5th 2010, the Restaurant was nine tenths empty but the moody front of house staff asked us if we had pre booked before consulting an empty ledger. Clearly the restaurant opened far too short staffed that evening; is that though an excuse for subsequent poor quality of Service? The Restaurant's menus were rather grubby to touch! I witnessed Waiters all handling the same block of parmesan cheese, (having being doing God knows what previously) to then grate it over customers meals - yeeugh! The plates were cold & subsequently the food went cold too quickly. My Chicken Risotto portion was over priced & kiddies size - I left hungry! The meatball portion was huge but they hadn't had long enough cooking in their sauce & were rather too chewy, as a result our kids actually left loads. I predict Wokingham people will begin to vote with their feet if the food / service continues to deteriorate in this restaurant."

"Very nice place indeed. But, who allows yet another Italian to Wokingham? We have 3 in Broad Street, (Immo, Zizzi, Pizza Express), then Prezzo, Rossini's, Sorento's, the one in Rose Street, Don Beni's. That makes 8!! In one town. Is that not just a bit dull!"

"I completely agree with the reviewer about Wokingham needing more choice of restaurants, but I did enjoy the meal I had at Zizzi recently. I chose the sea bass for my main course and was pleasantly surprised when a whole fish - complete with head and tail - arrived. It had been cooked in a rustic style with herbs, tomato a lemon, and really was delicious. Not the cheapest option on the menu but full marks to Zizzi for serving it in this way, and not the ubiquitous pan-fried version. Overall an enjoyable, if relatively pricey, meal. My only criticism is that the lights were too bright where we were sat."
